6th “Madame Guitar”, an international festival of the acoustic guitar, will take place between September 23rd and 25th in
Tricesimo (just north of Udine, NE Italy), put up, as always, by the Buttrio Folk Club, an association which since 1990 has
brouth to the area “the music of the world”. Like all previous editions, it will host concerts in theatres, schools, squares,
restaurants, and there also will be workshops, meetings and a qualified lutery exhibition.
More than 20 international artists will be part of the festival; among them some ‘firstlings’, like the English trio of
acoustic guitars 3 BOXES, formed by Clive Gregson (once leader of Any Trouble, then with the Richard Thompson
band, in a duo with Christine Collister and in Ian Matthews’ Plainsong), by Mark Griffiths (he too with Plainsong and
before that in Matthews Southern Comfort, bass player with the Shadows for 15 years, and also with qualified musicians like
Peter Frampton, Duane Eddy, Mark Knopfler, Bonnie Tyler, Gallagher & Lyle , Nina Hagen, Zoot Money, etc.) and by Andy
Roberts (in Plainsong too, but also in Pink Floyd’s The Wall tour band, with Kevin Ayers, Roy Harper, Maddy Prior and
the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band). An absolute première will be Gastor de Paco who, at 17, last year won the title of best
flamenco guitarist at the Festival de Cante de la Unión, the most prestigious flamenco event in Spain. There will also be
Adrian Byron Burns, a big blues voice and a refined acoustic guitarist, once lead vocalist with ex-Stone Bill Wyman’s
Rhythm Kings, and the National steel guitar of John Crampton, an Englishman with a Tom-Waits-like big voice.
Among first-class fingerpickers, there will be the incredible Antonio Forcione with a percussionist from Brazil,
Adriano Adewale, Eric Lugosch from the States, Sándor Szabó from Hungary in a special project on Magyar
tradition, Marcio Rangel from Brazil (with trumpet player Flavio Boltro, the ‘diamond point’ of Italian jazz),
Massimo Varini, the all-star Italian guitarist engaged in a few days project with junior students from the area,
Maurizio Brunello and Lorenzo Favero, already present in 2010, but who has just won a competition among young
guitarists at Sarzana Acoustic Guitar Meeting.
The spectacular busker-duo Tessaris-Stefanizzi will return to Tricesimo after the success of two years ago; the
original songwriting of the local duo Deja with a growing name in Europe, the indi-folk of Silvia & The Fishes On
Friday; Max Prandi ‘s blues and the songs of Southafrican Nibs Van Der Spuy, a fine guitarist with some echoes of
Ben Harper, will also be part of the festival. Finally, two Italian fingerstylists, Stefano Barbati and Dario
Fornara, will present their new CDs, and the festival will be closed by Italian songwriter (and good picker) Goran
Kuzminac who, following the festival’s tradition, at the end of his performance will sing the song that gives the name
to the festival accompanied by all the guitarists still present in Tricesimo for the ‘grand finale’.
